South African, Blue Note-signed pianist Nduduzo Makhathini and Swedish saxophonist Karl Martin Almqvist found each other in 2014 and formed the quartet Ababhemu Quartet with Norwegian bassist Magne Thormodsæter and South African drummer Ayanda Sikade. They play jazz rooted in a South African tradition with influences from the American 60s in the tracks of MCoy Tyner and John Coltrane.
Their first appearance took place during the Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival 2022 and we caught the magical live act on film.
